The children got chocolate. The adults got a revised departure time.
Political satire. The planning meeting, officials, passengers, announcements, and dialogue below are invented. The real event is documented after the story.
The Halloween planning meeting was nearly finished when Donald asked what they were doing for the children.
"Candy, pumpkins, music," an aide said.
Donald waited.
"And?"
"That's generally the event, sir."
"No aircraft?"
The aide looked down at her clipboard. It had been a very peaceful clipboard until then.
A small gathering of airspace
Donald wanted a flyover. Something modest. Just a presidential airplane passing overhead so everybody could appreciate how much he cared about children looking up at his airplane.
"Most people put a skeleton on the porch," the aide said.
"Does the skeleton have four engines?"
"No."
"Then we're already doing better."
An aviation official explained that arranging the display could affect other flights.
Donald was delighted to hear that other planes were participating.
"They're not participating. They're waiting."
"That's how you know it's important."
The official tried a different approach. People aboard those planes had places to be.
"So do I," Donald said. "Right here, watching the plane."
Your connection has been replaced by a spectacle
At an imaginary airport gate, a passenger named Carol received a notification.
Her departure had been delayed.
She refreshed the app. The app refreshed its condolences.
An announcement explained that operations were temporarily affected by a special event.
Carol asked whether the special event was weather.
"No."
"Mechanical trouble?"
"No."
"Someone important needs to land?"
"Someone important needs to watch something that doesn't need to land."
Carol looked at her connection time. It had become more of a historical reference.
The airline offered her a new itinerary featuring a city she had never intended to visit and a departure time technically still belonging to the same week.
"Happy Halloween," the agent said.
"What am I supposed to be dressed as?"
"A passenger. We're hoping the costume becomes accurate later."
Full-size inconvenience
Back at the planning meeting, the aide asked whether they could simply hand out larger candy bars.
Donald explained that anybody could buy a larger candy bar.
"You cannot buy the expression on a child's face when an enormous airplane flies over."
The aviation official began to mention fuel, personnel, coordination, and everybody else's evening.
Donald waved him off. He was talking about the expression.
A communications adviser proposed calling the flyover a special treat.
"For the people at the airport too?" the aide asked.
"They're getting extra time with their families."
"Some of their families are at the destination."
The adviser wrote down: OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE NEW FAMILIES AT GATE B12.
They considered giving delayed passengers a commemorative chocolate bar. This was rejected because someone would have to explain why the chocolate could travel and they couldn't.
Donald asked whether the airport had thanked him.
The official said several people had used his name.
"Beautiful."
Please remain seated until the president is entertained
By the end of the meeting, the administration had developed a complete passenger-assistance plan.
Anyone who missed a connection could watch the video.
Anyone who missed dinner could admire the candy.
Anyone who questioned the arrangement would be asked why they hated children.
Carol eventually received another message. Her flight was boarding.
She hurried to the gate, grateful that the evening might finally be moving again.
The agent scanned her pass.
"Did you enjoy the Halloween festivities?"
"I wasn't at the Halloween festivities."
The agent checked the screen.
"According to the delay, you were."
